Attractor or Imitator? The Soft Plastic Advantage
Technique: Walk the Dog
New Products: Calamari Scent
Featured Hogy:
7-inch Amber
Here on Cape Cod, (and New England for that matter) the 7" amber Hogy is popular with anglers fishing for school sized striped bass as they appear in our waters. If you look at a live squid swimming in the water, you'll notice they are amber, so this color is a natural choice for anglers trying to "match the hatch" with squid.

Mission Statement

Our goal is to help anglers catch more "and bigger" fish by using our products.

Introduction To Hogy eMagazine

In each issue we hope to not only introduce anglers to some innovative techniques with big soft plastics but also to capture, in the form of destination articles, how anglers from all over are using our products. As we travel with the Hogys, we are continually learning new techniques from different regions and different species and applying them in our own back yard on Cape Cod with great success. We're also showing anglers in other parts of the country techniques we're learned here that may be new and innovative in their areas. In coming months, we'll have articles from all over the country. Articles may be written by guides, avid fisherman, anglers with anecdotes they want to share, and stories from us, Capt. Mike Hogan and Gene Bourque of Hogy Lures and Editor at Large with On The Water magazine.

This is our first issue. We look forward to your feedback.

Destination: Woods Hole

Like many a striper addict in the Northeast, I've spent plenty of hours tossing live eels to hungry bass. I'm not a huge fan of anchoring up and fishing chunk bait or sitting on a beach with a spiked rod, hoping some fish comes along and discovers my offering. Active fishing - that's what I like - and using eels is as close to tossing a plug as you can get with live bait. However, as the years have passed I've grown less fond of the effort that's required to use eels. Procuring the bait, keeping it healthy until it's time to grab one of the slimy critters with a rag, then pushing a hook through its jaw and eye, which often resulted in an eel pretzel wrapped around my leader. Then there was the expense of these baits, which has been getting larger every year. Could there be a reasonable alternative, something that could be fished like an eel and get the same amount of attention for the stripers I love to catch?

Attractor or Imitator? The Soft Plastic Advantage

By Gene Bourque

The best fishermen are astute observers of nature and use what they've learned from that observation to catch more fish. Sure, now and then you'll see someone get lucky and just begin tossing whatever happens to be on the end of their line and catch some fish, but more often than not the angler who's spent time thinking about what the fish are eating based on careful observation and experience is far more successful. To the savvy fisherman, the question of trying imitate as precisely as possible what baits are available versus just trying to get his quarry's attention in the first place is always one of the biggest conundrums. If everything works out, he'll manage to do both. This is one of the many reasons soft plastic baits are such a good choice - and so effective.

Technique: Walk the Dog

Hogys are based on a soft jerk bait design, so the Walk the Dog technique is near and dear to our hearts.

Point the rod tip toward the water and twitch the Hogy™ as you reel, using short jerking motions to add topwater "walking" action to the lure. I generally recommend a pause every so often to imitate a severely wounded bait fish. You will often find that you'll get hits when you start reeling again. Change retrieve speeds and twitching frequencies until you dial in exactly what the fish want at the moment.

New Products: Calamari Scent

Some anglers swear by scents and they are especially effective in dark or murky water when gamefish must use all their senses to locate their prey. Rather than scents, we prefer to call our attractants "flavors," as we have devised a special formula that is designed to be absorbed into Hogy Soft baits. Just add a few drops to Hogys in a sealable bag or container and let them soak it up!

Calamari: Every saltwater game fish feeds on squid, so it was the obvious choice for us as the first flavor to introduce to our new line.

Hope you've enjoyed this issue of Hogy Lures E-magazine! In the next few months we'll be bringing you stories and tips about fishing destinations we've visited, techniques we've used with success with Hogy Premium Baits and other lures, and a variety of fishing tales. Please send us any ideas for subjects you'd like to see covered, and digital images of fish taken with Hogys will be put up in our gallery. Best of luck and Tight Lines!

Sincerely,
