10 inch Jiggin Hogy

Jiggn' Hogy Swimbaits are available in all the Hogy colors and come in 4 and 24-packs

The 10" Jiggn' Hogy was originally designed based on the feedback we heard from anglers using large jig heads to fish with Hogys in deeper water, up to 60 plus feet. Since the rigging groove associated with the Hogy Quick Rig was unnecessary to anglers fishing with jig heads, anglers said they preferred one without it, which would allow a for a little extra gripping power on jigs 3 ounces and larger. And so came the 10" Jiggn' Hogy Swim Bait.

Our goal is to help anglers catch more "and bigger" fish by using our products.

Destination: Upper Cape: Part 1

By Gene Bourque

Destination: Upper Cape

I've been fortunate to live in Falmouth, Massachusetts for the last 35 years. That still makes me a "wash ashore" in the eyes of the true Cape Codders (and increasingly rare breed these days!) but over the course of those years I've managed to fish enough of the varied shoreline of the Upper Cape to consider myself pretty well experienced, if not an expert! Although we don't have the sandy, wind swept vistas and rolling surf of Lower Cape, there is enough varied terrain for a lifetime of discovering new and productive fishing spots. I fish the "big beach" in Wellfleet and Truro a few times each fall, and I love to fish the flats at Barnstable in June and again in the late season. The Bay side beaches and estuaries from the East End of the Cape Cod Canal to Sandy Neck call me in the fall too, especially at the height of the annual migration of striped bass. But on a day to day basis I concentrate on the stretch from Cotuit, west toward Falmouth and Woods Hole, and north along the Buzzards Bay shore from Woods Hole to the West End of the Canal.

Fishing the Night Bight Fishing the Night Bite

By Gene Bourque

Some of my best fishing experiences - many of them in fact - happened under the cover of darkness. That's not necessarily because I caught more or bigger fish but because of the intimacy. When you can't see very far or very well, everything that's close by comes into focus and that's what makes fishing at night so special. After dark all our senses come into play. They have to, not just because we cannot hope to locate the fish without using every tool at our disposal, but also because the darkness is a little intimidating. Dangerous, even, depending on where and how you fish. And I like that!

Technique: 10" Jiggn' Hogy as a Popper
OK, so the Jiggn' Hogy Swimbait was designed as a deep water bait, but at the suggestion of graphic designer and artist for On The Water Magazine, Andy Nabreski,  we rigged one up Texas Style just to see what would happen. The result: Nothing short of dynamite soft popper! (check out the video: link)

Texas Rig it as you would any other soft plastic, but instead of re-inserting the hook down the center line of the bait, as you normally would, lightly bury the hook in the side.

 Poppin Hogy

This will create a larger than usual keel and help the bait track straight, long enough to rise to the surface and pop!

Unlike the 10" Original, fish the "Poppin'" Hogy with the tip up high. With short-fast cranks, pop the bait across the surface. You'll notice from the video that each time the bait "pops," the bait will recoil, sending a rolling "S" pattern right down the tail of the bait. If a fish crashes the bait and misses, SLOW DOWN, drop your rod tip and fish as a soft jerk bait and HANG ON. Unlike many other poppers you may have fished with in the past, this one is soft and will feel natural, thereby making a fish that swings and misses come back for another try.

New Products: 18" Hogy

18 inch HogyYes, we admit it; the 18" Hogy is huge, but it's been catching fish! Although the first report that came in outside of our field testing was a 12" schoolie sized striped bass, the 18" Hogy has quickly redeemed itself with numerous nighttime stripers topping 20 lbs. So far, our red wine color is our best seller, though Captain Mike's (aka Hogy) biggest has was on bubble gum caught in the middle of the day. We have sent a few to the musky hunters in the Midwest and some others to the California Hawg hunters, but no reports as of yet. (By the way, we're still waiting for pictures!)  Be sure to check out the video of the 18" Hogy in action by clicking here.

Hogy Fresh Flavors: Eel
Our first batch of Eel Flavor just came in and we expect it to be a favorite with the striper folks. The Hogy Fresh Eel Flavor was reproduced from actual specimens purchased at a local tackle shop and maintains a fresh and "live" flavor. As with all of the Hogy Fresh Flavors, it is designed to be absorbed into the Hogys, but it will also work on many other soft baits.

Kayak Fishing with Soft Plastics

by Gene Bourque

Kayaking with HogysFirst light, a dead calm morning and an angler heads out into the bay in his kayak. He can see swirls of big stripers as they feed on some decent size baits, which he can't identify quite yet. The fish are not crashing but feeding deliberately as big stripers will when the water is flat and they haven't yet been disturbed by boat traffic. He knows this opportunity won't last long, maybe an hour or so. The key is to get close to the fish as silently as possible and give them a look at something that swims in a natural manner.

Hope you've enjoyed this issue of Hogy Lures E-magazine! In the next few months we'll be bringing you stories and tips about fishing destinations we've visited, techniques we've used with success with Hogy Premium Baits and other lures, and a variety of fishing tales. Please send us any ideas for subjects you'd like to see covered, and digital images of fish taken with Hogys will be put up in our gallery. Best of luck and Tight Lines!

Sincerely,

Michael Hogan
