Blue-water Hogys: High Speed Rigging
|
I stumbled across this rigging method a couple of years ago when fishing with my good friend and fellow charter captain Chris Burden off the coast of Palm Beach for Mahis, Blackfin tuna and whatever else might be in the area. We were light on bally-hoo that day so I suggested that we rig a couple of my Hogys instead so that we could extend his bait supply further into the morning. |

By Gene Bourque
By Gene Bourque (written May 2007)
Through Woods Hole passage to the west is Buzzards Bay and the Cape shore from the Hole to the West End of the Canal, and this entire stretch can feature some terrific fishing. The water is warmer in Buzzards Bay through the summer so it may not hold as many really large stripers, except perhaps near the Canal where the twice-a-day shot of colder water through the Canal from Cape Cod Bay keeps things interesting. The other problem along this shore is that thing you've heard me mention over and over in this article: access - or the lack of it.

Staying in The Zone
|
By Gene Bourque
When I was a kid, my buddies and I spent many days fishing off the docks in our hometown, Mystic, Connecticut. Today those docks are lined with multi-million dollar condominiums but back then they were home to a small commercial fishing fleet. The docks were funky, smelly places where we prided ourselves on knowing which planks were safe to stand on and which ones weren't. I wish I could say we caught a variety of big fish but that wasn't the case. There were really only two fish that cooperated with any regularity: flounder (which we called flatfish or just "flats"), the desirable species, and the much more common cunners that were always waiting to steal the sandworm baits intended for the flats.

Light Tackle Down Deep for Striped Bass
|
By Captain Mike Hogan
In the 1990s, when I was running "six-pack" charters on Cape Cod on boats larger than my 18-foot skiff I run today, my go-to trolling outfits consisted of the usual heavy jigging rods outfitted with 4/0 Penn Senators loaded with wire line to catch striped bass and blue fish. I didn't think much about how heavy these outfits were and consequently how much effort was required to fish them properly. When I had clients onboard who either couldn't handle the outfits physically or preferred not to use such heavy outfits, I would compensate by changing fishing styles altogether and consequently missed out on some great trolling action when the fishing called for lures down deep...

New Products: 10" Hogy Double Wide
|
This 10 inch butter ball is the first of our new line of Double Wide SoftBaits. This massive bait was designed to mimic large bait fish with wide profiles. Weighing close to three ounces, this casting machine out-casts any other soft bait of its type on the market. When fished with your rod tip up, it leaves quite a wake. Tip-down and with sharp twitches, the DW will swim with a natural seductive motion. So far, the 10" Hogy Double Wide has caught striped bass over 40lb pounds.
Rig with patent pending Hogy Tandem Quick Rig, large offset worm style Hooks, or Jig Heads. This bait is for the trophy hunter. Rig with patent pending Hogy Tandem Quick Rig, large offset worm style Hooks, or Jig Heads. Currently Available in: Black, Bone, Amber, Rainbow Bunker.

Hogy Imitator Series We're coming out with a new line of baits in what we are calling the Hogy Imi tator series. The first of which, is the Hogy Lobster. It is a lifelike soft plastic lobster, which from the tip of the tail to the tip of the 8" and weighs a little over 4 ounces un-weighted.
The softy is for the trophy hunter and we recommend at least a 1 ounce jig head rigged "Maine Style" which means the from the tail. The plastic in the claws is so buoyant, that the lobster will rise into a defensive position. Stay tuned for the video of this soft-ation in action! Available in: Natural Green and Two Tone: Black Orange

Charlie Clackery
|
by Gene Bourque His name was Charles Clackery and when I was a boy it never occurred to me just how appropriate that name was. Clackery, more like clack-ity, hobbling down the narrow dock, swaying back and forth as he made his way toward the shore, his single crutch tip aimed at the worn planks, avoiding the random gaps between them. On one leg was a steel brace, the permanent reminder of the polio he had contracted during middle age, if I recall my father's stories correctly. |
