The Hogy Flatfish

Hogy FlatfishAs you may have heard us discuss before, lures can be broken down into two groups: 1: Imitator and 2: Attractor.  The Hogy Flatfish is an attractor all the way and a dead ringer for a juvenile flounder, sand dab, halibut or any small flattie. all favorites of many big gamefish around the world.

Our favorite way to fish the Hogy Flatfish is a drop shot rig (see article on drop-shotting below) in deeper water or on a small jig head in the shallows with a very short retrieve.

The Hogy Drop Shot Rig

Simply attach your weight and send your favorite Hogy down to the bottom. Start twitching and hang on. These rigs are constructed with 80-pound test fluorocarbon leader, aluminum offshore grade crimps, Owner 11/0 Offset worm hooks, and snaps for easily re-attaching weights. They are built to trophy game fish specs. See the video!

Drop Shotting with Big Soft Baits
By Captain Mike Hogan

Drop shottingOriginating in Japan, this soft bait bottom fishing technique first arrived in the United States on the West Coast, and made quite a splash in the largemouth bass scene. While "Drop Shotting" is popular in many freshwater bass fishing scenarios, it is largely under utilized in salt water.

What is a dropshot rig?
In a nutshell, you could say a drop shot rig is a terminal tackle configuration used in bottom fishing (typically with soft plastic baits) where the hook is tied (in-line) above a sinker. Why is this important?  Basically, by tying the hook directly "in-line," any movement in the line will transfer directly to the soft bait.

Fishing With Big Soft Plastics: Five Principles To Consider

By Captain Mike Hogan

Big bait big fishA few reasons why we specialize in big soft plastic baits for trophy sized game fish.

1. Opportunity Cost: Simply put, you'll weed out some smaller fish. If you're targeting a trophy, this point is worth considering. (I'm not a big fish snob, but wouldn't you rather catch something bigger if you had a choice?) By weeding out smaller fish you are minimizing down time where you could be missing an opportunity on other fish. Maybe your fish of a lifetime! Also, hooked fish can sometimes spook others in a school. You don't want to waste your BIG shot on a smaller fish.
Hook Me Up!
by Gene Bourque

Hook me upI want to catch a school bluefin tuna. Is a size 10 hook about right, or a 10/0? Heading out to dangle a worm in the local pond for some panfish, or maybe a trout if I'm lucky. Should I buy some size 6 hooks, or 6/0? The answers to these questions should be obvious if you're perusing the shelves of the local tackle shop, but how about if you're ordering from an on-line retailer where pictures can often be deceiving? Experienced fishermen don't give these numbers a second thought when buying but I can tell you this. In my years of working behind the counters of tackle shops, I noted that hook sizes are the single most confusing aspect of terminal tackle to the novice and even intermediate level anglers.
Hogy Approved Product Review: The AquaSkinz Surf Pouch
Okay, I admit it, I'm a gear junkie. I can't help my self when I see something that I think is "cool." Sometimes my impulse purchases work out and others, well, let's just say they join my collection of stuff! But in this case, The large Surf Pouch by AcquaSkinz  instantly  became a regular item for me and since it's holds our soft baits so well, I thought I'd pass this one along.

Aquaskinz

This baby has a deep, expandable center pocket that is perfect for storing your large soft baits. I first came across the pouch a couple of seasons ago when I met Kadir, the owner of the company at a show in New Jersey. Admittedly, I didn't know much about his product line and consequently I was complaining about the short coming of the industry in not providing something for us soft bait guys to carry when surf fishing. He walked away and came back with their Large Belt Pouch. Simply put, it was exactly what I was looking for.
